Assembly Member Santiago Honors Trinity Tran as Woman of the Year

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, CA) – In celebration of Women’s History Month, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) is honoring Trinity Tran as Woman of the Year for the 53rd Assembly District. As a dedicated community organizer and activist, Trinity has paved the way to bring economic justice to Los Angeles and California.

“I am absolutely honored to give this distinction to Trinity Tran. She has worked tirelessly to fight for economic justice for many members of my district and to people across California,” said Assembly Member Santiago. “Trinity is an advocate for some of the most vulnerable populations in our state. Her dedication and perseverance is an inspiration to many, and I am more than happy to present her with this award.”

As co-founder and lead organizer of California Public Banking Alliance, Public Bank LA and Divest LA, Trinity has mobilized activists in Los Angeles and Sacramento to advocate for public banking options at the city and the state level. She formed a statewide coalition to support AB 857 “The Public Banking Act,” which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019. Trinity has also worked to address food insecurity in Los Angeles as the volunteer Executive Director of Urban Partners Los Angeles (UPLA) which runs one of the largest food banks in the area. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, UPLA has provided food to thousands of individuals and families in Southern California.

"I am incredibly honored to receive this recognition from Assembly Member Miguel Santiago and the 53rd Assembly District,” Trinity Tran said. “As one of the most ethnically diverse and densely populated areas in the country, it’s crucial that our work here becomes the blueprint for a better world—from public banking and designing an equitable banking system that works for all people--to scaling up the operations of our food bank to serve thousands of disadvantaged families in need. I’d like to thank all of our allies for their sacrifices and commitment to powering us through the pandemic and beyond.”

Every year, the California State Assembly hosts a Woman of the Year celebration during Women’s History Month to honor women throughout the state who have made distinct contributions to their communities. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the California State Assembly continued with the annual celebration in a virtual setting.

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance and Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He also sits on the Assembly Committees on Public Safety, Health, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
