(Los Angeles, CA) – Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis joined Northeast Community Clinics (NECC), California Hospital Medical Center and the Los Angeles Labor Federation for the initial distribution of 1,500 COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines were administered to local essential workers and vulnerable populations who keep our community operating and our economy growing. Essential workers continue to pull us through an unprecedented pandemic, and they deserve to have the necessary resources to keep them and the families they come home to as safe and healthy as possible.
“Throughout the pandemic, essential workers never stopped coming to work putting at risk their health and their family’s health. We are immensely thankful for their sacrifice for which deserves to be recognized, and ensuring they are prioritized for the COVID-19 vaccine is one way to show them how much they matter to the stability of our economy,” said Dr. Christopher Lau, NECC Executive Director. “Thank you as well to the sponsors and partners of this effort in saving 1,500 lives. Your contributions and influence have brought 1,500 families much closer to safety.”
In partnership with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (LA Fed), NECC medical staff and LA Fed volunteers will be distributing 1,500 COVID-19 vaccinations to Los Angeles’ food workers, drivers, construction workers, government employees, and home care and nursing care workers. Along with the LA Fed, NECC is teaming up with Local 300, SEIU Local 5000, SEIU Local 2015, and the Teamsters Union to ensure that essential workers that continue to be in need of vaccinations are reached. Sponsors for the event included Local 300, UFCW 770, the Southern California Gas Company, and East Los Angeles College.
“Our essential workers put themselves at risk on a daily basis to keep our economy running and too often their sacrifices go unnoticed,” Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) said. “The least we can do is make sure that they receive their vaccines as soon as possible so they can protect both themselves and their communities. Essential workers matter, vaccine equity matters and vaccinating essential workers matters.”
“Today’s vaccination efforts will mark a new chapter for essential workers who throughout this devastating pandemic have placed their health at risk to ensure continuity of critical services in our society,” shared Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District. “I am thrilled to partner with NECC to bring 1,500 doses of hope to our courageous essential workers, ushering in hope for a new normal.”
All 1,500 essential workers are scheduled to be fully vaccinated by April 30th, 2021 and are receiving the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Each outdoor vaccine distribution event brought together more than 80 volunteers and medical staff to provide essential workers across multiple trades and industries culturally-informed care.
