(Los Angeles, CA) – Today, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) and the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) hosted a virtual town hall to spread awareness about free community college in California through the California College Promise. The town hall can be viewed here.
“As a former Los Angeles Community College District Board Member, I saw first-hand how community college prepares our students for the workforce and provides them better opportunities,” said Assembly Member Santiago. “That is why I successfully fought to establish the California College Promise to provide tuition free education to students across California. We hosted this town hall today to educate students in my district and around L.A. so they can hear about this option of attending community college for free.”
Established via AB 19 (Santiago, 2017), the California College Promise provides two years of tuition free community college to all first-time, full-time students. LACCD has been a long-time proponent of free community college and has its own program, the L.A. College Promise, which also provides free tuition and other support.
Over the past 77 years, LACCD has served more than three million students and has offered an affordable college education to all of L.A.’s residents. The District is the largest in the nation with nine colleges in its network, graduating thousands of professionals each year. Students can earn a certificate or earn an Associate’s degree and transfer to a four-year university.
Assemblymember Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He also sits on the Assembly Committee on Health, Public Safety, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
