Governor Newsom Releases 2022-23 Budget and Assembly Member Santiago Responds

(Sacramento, CA) – Following Governor Newsom’s recent announcement on the 2022-23 budget, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement:

“Thanks to our strong economic growth, our budget surplus is now $45.7 billion,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago.

“Now it’s time to make sure that this economic growth benefits all Californians. As a strong advocate of Medi-Cal expansion, I am thrilled to see Medi-Cal expanded regardless of immigration status. Also, as the Chair of the Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness, I am excited to see billions more to combat homelessness with an emphasis on hotel/motel conversions, homeless housing (both short-term and long-term) and behavioral health.

Now let’s also use this budget to expand COVID related aid such as $2 billion for rent relief. Beyond that, we should focus on building more affordable housing and expanding free higher education to help all Californians regardless of income have access to housing and higher education.”

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization and the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
