Assemblymember Isaac Bryan Releases Statement on Supreme Court Ruling to Overturn Roe v. Wade

For immediate release:

Sacramento—Assemblymember Isaac G. Bryan (D-54, Los Angeles) has released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling:

"Today the Supreme Court of the United States delivered a devastatingly wrong decision that repeals the right to privacy enshrined in the Constitution, a right that has been the law of the land for 50 years, as recognized by the historic Roe v. Wade case in 1973 and Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1992. The right to privacy certainly includes the right to abortion, but it is far more than that. It is the right to seek the guidance of a medical professional you trust and access the healthcare services you need without interference from strangers. For five decades this decision and the accompanying rights have been under constant attack. The arguments aimed at it have been powered by misinformation, sexism, ignorance, and hate. Women who receive abortion services have been vilified and their motives and circumstances viciously misrepresented. The value of the lives and autonomy of every woman in this nation has been utterly disregarded. What remains are hollow platitudes from those who claim to value life but who constantly demonstrate their failure to do so with every action they take.

Today, we stand with women, and with elected leaders right here in California who are committed to ensuring the right to privacy, and all that entails, in our state. We will value and respect women. We will provide them the privacy to make the best choices for their health, their future, and their families. We will ensure that California's Constitution speaks loudly, and clearly, with the voice of the people – enshrining the fundamental constitutional right to abortion and to choose or refuse contraceptives for all Californians."
