Assembly Member Santiago joined Sen. Alex Padilla, Congressmember Jimmy Gomez, Congressmember Robert Garcia, Father John Moretta, and Community Leader Terry Cano to announce their work to make the Exide cleanup site a "Superfund site." This designation would help expedite the Exide cleanup. Exide's factory which has since closed polluted the community with lead which causes harmful health effects such as miscarriages, developmental disabilities and more. In addition to the Superfund site work, Assembly Member Santiago is leading the effort to pass AB 861 this year which would increase oversight of the Exide cleanup. Just last May, Assembly Member Santiago also helped secure $67.3 million in additional funding in the budget to clean up parkways polluted by Exide’s lead.
Our office partnered with the Michelson Found Animals Foundation and other community groups to put on this event in Boyle Heights at the Weingart East LA YMCA. Over 400 community members attended to help take care of their dogs and cats (and even adopt a few orphaned pets).
