Electronic Dance Music Month

Recognizing Dance Music as a Pillar of California's Creative Identity

Electronic Dance Music Month

In recognition of the cultural, social and economic significance of electronic dance music (EDM), the California State Legislature declared June 2025 as Electronic Dance Music Month.

Authored by Assemblymember Mark González, Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 92 honors the rich legacy and continued evolution of EDM as a powerful form of artistic expression that unites Californians across backgrounds and generations. From its roots in disco and underground club scenes to the global festivals that now define California's music landscape, EDM embodies the values of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect (PLUR)—core principles that reflect the inclusive spirit of our state.

A Global Movement with California Connections

Electronic dance music has evolved from the underground clubs of the 1980s to become one of the most unifying global art forms of the 21st century. In California, EDM is more than just music—it is a community built on shared values of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect (PLUR). These values create safe, inclusive spaces where individuals from all backgrounds can express themselves freely and joyfully. California has long served as a hub for EDM culture, influencing global trends and nurturing generations of DJs, producers, dancers, and fans.

Economic & Community Impact

California is home to some of the most iconic EDM festivals in the world—including Coachella, HARD Summer, Beyond Wonderland, and more—drawing millions of attendees annually. These events not only uplift artists and creatives, but also generate jobs, tourism, and economic growth in cities across the state. From San Francisco to San Bernardino, EDM festivals bring communities together while supporting small businesses, hospitality workers, and the broader arts and entertainment economy.

Celebrating Culture, Creativity and Community in AD 54

Assembly District 54 (AD 54) is home to some of the most culturally rich and artistically vibrant neighborhoods in Los Angeles—neighborhoods that have long served as creative incubators for music, fashion, nightlife, and grassroots expression. From Koreatown's underground DJ scene to the iconic venues of Downtown LA and the community block parties of Boyle Heights, electronic music pulses through the district's cultural landscape.

EDM has played a central role in bringing together diverse communities across the district, offering safe and inclusive spaces for self-expression—especially for LGBTQ+ youth, artists of color and immigrants who find joy, freedom and identity on the dance floor.

AD 54 also plays host to numerous small businesses—event spaces, record shops, fashion designers, and music collectives—that contribute to California’s growing creative economy. Whether it’s a Friday night warehouse set in the Arts District or a community gathering in Montebello, EDM is part of the soundtrack of life.
