LA gears up for long-awaited opening of Sixth Street Viaduct, connecting Boyle Heights to downtown

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles will begin a three-day community celebration Friday to mark the completion of the Sixth Street Viaduct, a new connection between Boyle Heights and the downtown Arts District that replaces one of the city's most iconic structures.

The previous viaduct, built back in 1932, was a city landmark that made appearances in films and television shows, mostly notably "Grease" and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day."

Father’s Day celebrated with mariachi music march, breakfast in Boyle Heights

A fun and musical Father’s Day march with Mariachi Los Dorados De Villa, elected officials, community members — and fathers, of course — was held on Sunday morning, June 19, thanks to the Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA in Boyle Heights.

The “Serenatas para papa” march was followed by a pancake breakfast for fathers and others in the community. Elected officials who were expected to join in the march, and give speeches at the breakfast, included Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (ASMDC-53), state Sen. María Elena Durazo (SD-24) and Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León (CD-14).

Assembly members & education leaders rally for Debt Free College Plan

LOS ANGELES – Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), Assembly Member Mike Fong (D-Alhambra) and education leaders in Los Angeles hosted a rally to urge the Legislature and Governor to pass the Legislature’s Debt Free College Plan.

The Debt Free College Plan includes; 1) $25 million to expand free community college to all full-time students, 2) over $500 million for Cal Grant reform, which will provide 150,000 new students with Cal Grants, and 3) historic investments in the Middle Class Scholarship.
