Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Mark González released the following statement today in response to federal charges against Labor Union Leader David Huerta.
"I stand shoulder to shoulder with my brother and friend, President David Huerta — a fearless union leader, a champion for working families, and a relentless defender of our immigrant communities," said Assemblymember Mark González. "David was not breaking the law — he was exercising his constitutional right to speak out against injustice. For that, he was violently detained by federal agents for several days and now faces a felony. That is not justice — that is an abuse of power.
What happened to David is personal. It is painful and it is a warning. If they can target someone like him — they can come for any of us. Let me be clear: we will not be silent. We will not be intimidated. We will not let this moment break our spirit.
This is bigger than one person or one protest — it's about who we are as a people and the country we're determined to build. A country where dignity isn't a privilege, where free speech is protected, and where no one — no matter how powerful — is above the law.
To our communities watching and hurting: you are not alone. We see you. We love you. And we will keep resisting — together. Let them see our unity. Let them feel our courage. And let them know: we are not backing down."
Assemblymember Mark González is the Assembly Majority Whip. He represents the 54th Assembly District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
