Assemblymember González and Senator Durazo Condemn Trump’s Mass ICE Raids with SJR 9

For immediate release:

Sacramento, CA – Today, the Assembly passed Senate Joint Resolution 9, marking the state's official condemnation of President Donald Trump's mass ICE raids and denouncing the illegal militarization of our state's National Guard.

"SJR 9 is our call to justice," said Assemblymember González (D-Los Angeles). "This President's racist agenda to target people who look like me cannot — and will not — stand. We will not remain silent while entire communities are terrorized, sealed off by armored trucks, and patrolled by agents with rifles."

"There is a real fear in our neighborhoods right now. Immigrant men, women, and children are being targeted on all fronts. With the looming threat of immigration enforcement, our communities are faced with the threat of family separation, fear, and instability," said Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles). "The federal government has continued their aggressive and violent military-style immigration raids that serve only to terrorize our neighborhoods. SJR 9 sends a clear message that California will stand with our communities, defend their rights, and ensure every resident can live, work, and thrive without fear."

Since June 6th, President Trump has authorized military-style raids that have upended our communities. These raids are racially motivated, with citizens of the United States of America being detained and nearly deported after being picked up in a sweep.

SJR 9 reminds not just our state, but the entire nation: In California — regardless of your immigration status or the color of your skin — you are human, you are worthy, and you belong. California is, and will remain, a beacon of hope in the darkness of tyranny.

Assemblymember Mark González is the Assembly Majority Whip. He represents the 54th Assembly District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
