LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, Assemblymember Mark González (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement after the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve the long-awaited modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center:
"Today, the City Council took a bold step forward to invest in the future of Downtown Los Angeles and strengthen our city's global competitiveness. This project is a major victory for Los Angeles workers, businesses, and residents. The Convention Center expansion will create thousands of good-paying union jobs, boost tourism and hospitality, and drive long-term economic growth for our City."
"This project will deliver billions in new economic activity, generate tens of millions in tax revenue to fund essential City services, and ensure Los Angeles can compete with San Diego, Anaheim, and other cities for world-class conventions and events. With the 2028 Olympic Games around the corner, this modernization also ensures we have the facilities needed to welcome the world."
"As Downtown continues to recover from the pandemic, this expansion is the kind of bold investment that will bring foot traffic back, revitalize small businesses, and restore energy to the heart of our city. There is no other shovel-ready infrastructure project in Los Angeles today that can deliver this scale of impact."
"DTLA deserves this transformative investment. This expansion reaffirms Los Angeles' place as a global leader in commerce, culture, and opportunity."
Assemblymember Mark González is the Assembly Majority Whip. He represents the 54th Assembly District, composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
