(Sacramento) -- Earlier today, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. took action on a historic package of gun control measures forwarded to him by the State Legislature yesterday.
Assembly Majority Whip, Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), the author of one of those twelve measures (AB 1511), issued the following statement in response:
“I commend Governor Brown on his leadership on this historic package of bills,” said Assemblymember Santiago. “Today’s signing of my AB 1511 shows that, among other things, Governor Brown has decided that he too, has had enough, with gun violence in California.”
Assembly Bill 1511 closes a dangerous loophole in California’s gun background check law that allows for firearms to be loaned to acquaintances who may not have cleared the state’s background check process. The measure was co-sponsored by Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and was jointly authored by Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco).
“My son and the 9 million other children here in California all deserve the ability to reach their God-given potential without the threat and fear of gun violence and classrooms interrupted by school shooting lockdown drills,” continued Santiago. “I’m proud to have played a role in this historic moment in California.”
Assemblymember Miguel Santiago is the Majority Whip of the California State Assembly and sits on the Assembly’s Public Safety Committee. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
