Los Angeles, CA – Today, California State Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) joined Governor Gavin Newsom in Los Angeles as the Governor announced the budget’s $2.3 billion master plan for early childcare and education. This year’s investments pay for thousands of new childcare slots, expand subsidized childcare for qualified CalWORKs families, increase funding for after-school programs and expand paid family leave. Santiago released the following statement:
“One of the biggest struggles for working families is securing affordable childcare and education. Many in my district cannot afford to place their children in childcare programs. If they can, there are long wait periods before they can get a slot,” said Assemblymember Santiago. “I am proud to work with a governor who has prioritized early childcare and education. There is still much work to be done to ensure every child has an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in California.”
Assemblymember Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly’s Communications and Conveyance Committee, and a member of both the Assembly Public Safety Committee and the California Latino Legislative Caucus. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
