(Sacramento, CA) – Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement upon Governor Gavin Newsom’s signing of AB 1304, a bill that will fight housing discrimination by ensuring local governments affirmatively further fair housing in all their housing and community development-related activities:
“We must fight the housing discrimination and racism that still haunts many parts of our state,” said Assembly Member Santiago. “We have a duty to undo this horrible history of housing discrimination and create a more equitable California for low-income and BIPOC communities. AB 1304 puts local governments on the road to doing exactly this in their housing elements.”
AB 1304 is sponsored by the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, National Housing Law Project, Public Advocates, Public Interest Law Project, and Western Center on Law and Poverty. Governor Newsom signed this legislation on September 28, 2021.
Assemblymember Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He also sits on the Assembly Committee on Health, Public Safety, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
