Eviction Protections Bill Passed by Assembly

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, CA) Following the California State Assembly’s passage of AB 2179 (Grayson and Wicks), a bill that will extend the eviction protections in California until June 30th, on a 62 to 13 vote, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement:

“It would be an injustice to not extend eviction protections when we have tens of thousands of renters who are three days away from facing an eviction tsunami and have still not received rent relief funds,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago.

“The truth is that the rent relief dollars we fought so hard to give to renters, and landlords, need to be sent out more quickly to thousands of households who need it the most. Families are still waiting for their rent relief and leaving them in open waters without a lifeboat could be disastrous. I’m proud we took swift action today to extend protections beyond this Thursday for three months so that folks aren’t forced to choose between feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads.”

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization and the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
