Bill to Fight Air Pollution in Disadvantaged Communities Passes Policy Committee

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, CA) Following the passage through the Assembly Judicial Committee of AB 2910 (Air Quality Violations Enforcement), a bill that would increase the maximum strict liability penalties statewide against air quality violators, author Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement:

“There are thousands of children in my district suffering from health ailments caused by air pollution,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago.

“For decades, the communities I represent have suffered from continued air quality violations that pollute our air, damage our lungs and cause lifelong health problems that can lead to tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. It’s time we strengthen our enforcement tools that hold facilities accountable by increasing the maximum strict liability and negligence penalties for air quality violators so our communities can have the cleaner air we deserve. This bill will fight against climate change and protect our most vulnerable from these harms.”

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization and the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
