Assembly Member Santiago's Bill Expanding Red Flag Laws Passes Senate Public Safety Committee

(Sacramento, CA) – Yesterday, AB 2870 (Santiago) took a step closer to expanding common-sense gun safety measures that will help reduce gun violence in California. The bill would expand California’s “Red Flag” Laws to allow more family members and community members to file Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs) to keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others. While Congress is passing gun safety legislation, California has the chance to lead the nation and take even stronger measures on gun safety such as with AB 2870.

“With gun violence on the rise and mass shootings increasing, California continues to lead the nation in gun safety so that we may protect our schools, churches, and communities from senseless gun violence,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago, the lead author of the bill. “California’s gun laws save lives, and we must keep improving our gun safety laws to protect our community members.”

California’s “Red Flag” Laws have prevented at least 58 mass shootings since 2016. AB 2870 emphasizes the importance of these laws and keeping all Californians and communities safe for years to come.

He also sits on the Assembly Committee on Health, Public Safety, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy.
