“Within the many zip codes that compose Koreatown, there are too many low-income residents who do not have a medical home,” said Assembly Member Santiago. “It’s absolutely unacceptable to not take action when Koreatown has been federally recognized as a Medically Underserved Area with a health Professional shortage. This means that there are too few primary care providers, dental or mental health providers, and high infant mortality. The $3 million budget win will help expand essential healthcare services in Koreatown by building a “one stop shop” multi-service healthcare facility with a workforce development center, a teacher-training kitchen, and a community hall. This help comes at a crucial time as we continue to recover from COVID-19.”

“Our community deserves a space where they are welcomed in their language, where their culture is celebrated, and where they can receive quality healthcare without fear or repercussion,” said Erin Pak, CEO of Kheir Clinic. “With this gift, generously procured by our Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, we have reached our goal to develop a one-stop, multi-service healthcare facility."

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, Kheir has delivered nearly 61,000 hot meals and completed 113,000 wellness check phone calls to seniors Assembly Member Santiago’s district. Kheir remained open to provide grocery boxes, hot meals, personal protective equipment, COVID testing and vaccines, and its regular health care services. The $3 million to help construct the “one stop shop” will help Kheir Clinic continue to expand its services.
