(Los Angeles, CA)–Following the Governor’s signature on AB 1766 (expands access to state-issued IDs to all California residents) which is authored by Assembly Member Mark Stone (D-Monterey Bay), AB 1766’s co-author Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), released the following statement:
“It is time for all Californians regardless of immigration status to finally have state issued IDs. Undocumented community members have been relying on student IDs and gym membership cards to identify themselves as participants in our communities for far too long," said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago.
“I am proud to be a co-author of AB 1766 that now expands California ID eligibility to approximately 1.6 million undocumented residents. It’s time for all Californians, regardless of immigration status, to have access to the important resources and benefits that come with a state ID.”
Residents can apply for a California ID at the DMV without submitting proof of their lawful presence in the United States beginning no later January 1, 2027.
Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization and Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Los Angeles County Homelessness. He also sits on the Assembly Committees on Public Safety, Health, Higher Education and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 53rd District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Vernon.
