Young Child Tax Credit Bill Passes Revenue and Taxation Committee

(Sacramento, CA) Following the passage of AB 1128 (Santiago) through the Assembly Taxation and Revenue Committee on Monday, author Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement:

“AB 1128 will provide 700,000 families up to $1,083 to prevent them from falling back into poverty. California has the opportunity to put kids first and provide critical support to our lowest income families who may otherwise have to make gut-wrenching tradeoffs between food and rent,” said Assembly Member Miguel Santiago, lead author of this bill.

“I am thankful to Assembly Member Irwin for her leadership in passing this bill through the committee. With the federal Child Tax Credit expiring and inflation continuing, California must invest in our most vulnerable families so they may afford food and housing. AB 1128 offers hope for low-income families and essential workers who are in need of financial relief and are struggling to make ends meet.”

AB 1128 will expand the Young Child Tax Credit to all CalEITC eligible dependents and provide a tax credit up to $1,083 for families earning $30,000 or less per year with children between the ages of zero and 18 (and between 19-23 if they are students). This tax credit currently applies only to CalEITC eligible low-income families with children between the ages of zero and five.

This bill will be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization. He also sits on the Assembly Committees on Public Safety, Health, HigherEducation and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 54th District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
