(Los Angeles, CA) – Following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to overturn affirmative action, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) who was the first in his family to attend college and has passed legislation such as AB 19 and AB 2 making community college free released the following statement:
“This Supreme Court ruling flies straight in the face of equity, justice, diversity and inclusion. This is unequivocally damaging to children and families across the country!” said Assembly Member Santiago.
“As the first member of my family to attend college, I saw firsthand how vital educational institutions that foster diverse cultures and backgrounds are. Today, that ends with the Supreme Court decision.
Justice Sotomayor’s powerful dissent says, “Society’s progress toward equality cannot be permanently halted.” As someone who has fought for inclusion and social equity, I cannot agree more. Here in California, we will continue to fight to make college more accessible, affordable and welcoming for all.”
Assembly Member Miguel Santiago is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization. He also sits on the Assembly Committees on Public Safety, Health, HigherEducation and Utilities and Energy. He represents the 54th District composed of the cities of Los Angeles, Commerce, Montebello, and Vernon.
